Lesson notes

This lesson requires the teacher to present the actual Arabic text clearly. The focus is on the form of the Arabic text (recitation and copying), rather than detailed semantic analysis, which would be for higher grades.

However, a brief understanding of each passage's context is beneficial for the teacher.

A. Ayatul-Kursiyy (آية الكرسي - The Verse of the Throne)

Location: Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2), verse

2

5

5. Significance: It is considered the greatest verse in the Qur'an due to its profound description of Allah's Oneness, Majesty, and absolute power. It is frequently recited for protection against evil and calamities, and after every obligatory prayer.

Transliteration (for teacher's reference only): Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta'khudhuhu sinatunw-wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi'idhnihi. Ya'lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum. Wa la yuhituna bishay'im-min 'ilmihi illa bima sha'a. Wasi'a Kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya'uduhu hifzuhuma. Wa Huwal-'Aliyyul-'Azim. Brief Meaning (for teacher's understanding): Allah! There is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

B. Suratul Fil (سورة الفيل - The Elephant)

Location: Surah 105 of the Qur'an.

Significance: It narrates the historical event of Abraha, the Abyssinian general, and his army with elephants attempting to destroy the Kaaba in Mecca, and how Allah miraculously protected His Sacred House by sending flocks of birds (Ababeel) that pelted them with stones, annihilating the army. This event occurred in the year of Prophet Muhammad's birth.

Transliteration (for teacher's reference only): Bismil-lahir-Rahmanir-Rahim Alam tara kayfa fa'ala Rabbuka bi'as-hab-il-fil? Alam yaj'al kaydahum fi tadlil? Wa arsalahum 'alayhim tayran ababil? Tarmihim bihijaratim-min sijjiil? Faja'alahum ka'asfin ma'kul? Brief Meaning (for teacher's understanding): In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the owners of the Elephant? Did He not make their plot go astray? And He sent against them birds in flocks (Ababil), Pelted them with stones of baked clay, And made them like eaten straw.

C. Suratul Qadr (سورة القدر - The Power / Decree)

Location: Surah 97 of the Qur'an.

Significance: It describes Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree/Power), a blessed night in the month of Ramadan, when the Qur'an was first revealed. This night is considered better than a thousand months, and angels descend during it. Muslims strive to seek this night for worship and supplication.

Transliteration (for teacher's reference only): Bismil-lahir-Rahmanir-Rahim Inna anzalnahu fi Laylatil-Qadr. Wa ma adraka ma Laylatul-Qadr? Laylatul-Qadri khayrum-min alfi shahr. Tanazzalul-mala'ikatu war-Ruhu fiha bi'idhni Rabbihim min kulli amr. Salamun hiya hatta matla'il-fajr. Brief Meaning (for teacher's understanding): In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.* وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ مِنْ كُلِّ أَمْرٍ سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ Transliteration (for teacher's reference only): Bismil-lahir-Rahmanir-Rahim Inna anzalnahu fi Laylatil-Qadr. The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

D. Tajweed Basics for Primary 4: For this level, "correct recitation" primarily involves: Makharij al-Huruf (Points of Articulation): Ensuring each Arabic letter is pronounced from its correct place of origin in the mouth/throat. The teacher should model this clearly.

Harakat (Short Vowels): Correct pronunciation of Fatha (a), Kasra (i), Dhamma (u).

Sukoon (No Vowel): Stopping clearly on letters with sukoon.

Madd (Prolongation): Basic understanding of lengthening certain vowels (e.g., Alif after Fatha, Ya after Kasra, Waw after Dhamma). This is critical for fluency.

Nun Sakinah & Tanween (basic): Proper pronunciation when they appear, without going into complex rules.

E. Arabic Calligraphy/Writing for Primary 4: "Correctly copying" involves: Letter Formation: Students learn the correct shape of each individual Arabic letter.

Letter Joining: Understanding how letters connect differently depending on their position (beginning, middle, end, or isolated).

Direction of Writing: Arabic is written from right to left. * Neatness:** Emphasizing clear and legible script.

Materials: Whiteboard/Blackboard, markers/chalk, duster, Islamic Studies textbooks (if available for visual reference), exercise books, pencils, slates (for initial practice), Quranic recitation audio/video (optional).

A. Introduction (5 minutes)

Teacher Activity: Begin by briefly reviewing the importance of the Qur'an as the word of Allah and the benefits of reciting and memorizing its verses. Mention that today's lesson will focus on three very important parts of the Qur'an.

Student Activity: Students recall and share brief points about the Qur'an's significance.

B. Presentation of Ayatul-Kursiyy (15 minutes)

Teacher Activity: Write the entire Arabic text of Ayatul-Kursiyy clearly on the board, ensuring correct letter formation and spacing. Recite Ayatul-Kursiyy slowly and clearly, verse by verse, modeling correct Tajweed (Makharij, Harakat, Madd). Break down the verse into smaller phrases or even individual words, reciting each part multiple times. Explain that students will focus on accurate sound and writing, not deep meaning at this stage. Guide students to recite after the teacher, first chorally, then in small groups, and finally individually. Correct pronunciation errors immediately and patiently. Demonstrate how to correctly form challenging Arabic letters or joins within Ayatul-Kursiyy on the board.

Student Activity: Students observe the Arabic text on the board. Listen attentively to the teacher's recitation. Repeat after the teacher, first chorally, then in groups, then individually. Practice writing Ayatul-Kursiyy on their slates, focusing on correct letter formation and joining, mimicking the teacher's demonstration.

C. Presentation of Suratul Fil (10 minutes)

Teacher Activity: Erase Ayatul-Kursiyy and write the Arabic text of Suratul Fil on the board. Recite Suratul Fil slowly, verse by verse, emphasizing correct Tajweed. Repeat and break down verses for clear pronunciation. Guide students in choral and individual recitation, correcting as needed. Highlight any unique letter forms or joins within Suratul Fil for copying.

Student Activity: Observe Suratul Fil on the board. Listen and repeat after the teacher. Practice writing Suratul Fil on their slates.

D. Presentation of Suratul Qadr (10 minutes)

Teacher Activity: Erase Suratul Fil and write the Arabic text of Suratul Qadr on the board. Recite Suratul Qadr slowly, verse by verse, emphasizing correct Tajweed, particularly the Madd (lengthening) in words like 'Laylatul Qadr' and 'Ruh'. Repeat and break down verses. Guide students in choral and individual recitation, correcting as needed. Draw attention to any specific letter formations or joins in Suratul Qadr.

Student Activity: Observe Suratul Qadr on the board. Listen and repeat after the teacher. Practice writing Suratul Qadr on their slates.

E. Supervised Copying and Recitation Practice (15 minutes)

Teacher Activity: Instruct students to open their exercise books. Display Ayatul-Kursiyy, Suratul Fil, and Suratul Qadr on the board (or on charts). Instruct students to copy the Arabic texts neatly and accurately into their exercise books. Circulate around the classroom, monitoring students' writing, providing individual assistance with letter formation, joining, and ensuring they write from right to left. While students are copying, call individuals or small groups for quick recitation checks of specific verses from any of the three texts. Provide immediate feedback.

Student Activity: Students copy Ayatul-Kursiyy, Suratul Fil, and Suratul Qadr from the board into their exercise books, focusing on neatness and accuracy. Engage in individual or small-group recitation practice with the teacher.

F. Conclusion (5 minutes)

Teacher Activity: Summarize the importance of learning these verses. Announce that memorization and further practice will be ongoing. Assign homework.

Student Activity: Ask questions, note down homework. The teacher should use these questions during the lesson to check understanding and provide immediate feedback.

Question 1 (Recitation): The teacher recites the first part of Ayatul-Kursiyy: "اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ" and asks students to repeat it.

Solution/Feedback: Students should repeat "Allah, la ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyum" with correct pronunciation of 'Allah', clear 'la ilaha', and proper articulation of 'Hayyul Qayyum'. The teacher points out any incorrect sounds for specific letters (e.g., 'H' sound vs. 'h' sound).

Question 2 (Copying): The teacher writes the first verse of Suratul Fil: "أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ" on a section of the board and asks students to copy it onto their slates.

Solution/Feedback: Students should accurately reproduce the Arabic script, ensuring correct letter forms (e.g., 'alif', 'lam', 'ra', 'kaf', 'fa', 'ayn', 'ba') and proper joining of words. The teacher checks for errors like incorrect letter shapes, wrong direction of writing, or missing dots.

Question 3 (Recitation): The teacher recites the first two verses of Suratul Qadr: "إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ * وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ" and asks students to repeat.

Solution/Feedback: Students should repeat "Inna anzalnahu fi Laylatil-Qadr. Wa ma adraka ma Laylatul-Qadr" with clear pronunciation, paying attention to the lengthening (Madd) of 'Inna', 'Layla', and 'adraka'. The teacher corrects any shortening of these vowels or mispronunciation of 'Qadr'.

Question 4 (Copying): The teacher writes the last verse of Suratul Fil: "فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَأْكُولٍ" on the board and instructs students to copy it into their exercise books.

Solution/Feedback: Students should copy this verse accurately, ensuring correct joining of letters like 'fa-ja-a-la-hum' and 'ka-as-fin ma-ku-lin'. The teacher assesses for neatness, correct spacing, and accurate rendition of the Arabic script.

Real-life applications

Daily Worship and Protection: Students learn that Ayatul-Kursiyy is highly recommended for recitation after every obligatory prayer (Salat) to ensure protection and divine blessings. This is a common practice in Nigerian Muslim homes and mosques, integrating directly into their daily religious routine. They can also recite it before leaving home, before sleeping, or when feeling anxious, a practical application for seeking comfort and safety.

Moral Lessons and Reliance on Allah: Suratul Fil teaches about Allah's absolute power and protection over His Sacred House and His believers. This provides a foundational lesson in Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and reinforces the belief that no matter how powerful an enemy (like Abraha's army), Allah's will always prevails. This can be related to overcoming challenges in life or seeking Allah's help in difficult situations, a strong cultural and spiritual theme in Nigeria.

Spiritual Growth During Ramadan: Suratul Qadr is deeply connected to Laylatul Qadr, a night of immense spiritual significance in Islam, especially within the Nigerian Muslim community. Learning this Surah prepares students to appreciate and participate in the special worship, prayers, and remembrance of Allah during the last ten nights of Ramadan, fostering a deeper connection to their faith and cultural traditions.
