2. 1. What is a Spark Plug? A spark plug is an electrical device that fits into the cylinder head of some internal combustion engines and ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture by an electric spark. It is a critical component for the operation of petrol (gasoline) engines, converting electrical energy into a precisely timed spark to initiate combustion. 2.

2. Uses of Spark Plug (Performance Objective 1)

The primary uses of a spark plug are: Ignition of Air-Fuel Mixture: Its main function is to generate a high-voltage electrical spark within the engine cylinder, igniting the atomized air-fuel mixture at the precise moment during the combustion cycle. This initiates the power stroke of the engine.

Heat Transfer: Spark plugs also play a role in transferring heat away from the combustion chamber to the engine's cooling system. The rate at which a plug transfers heat is known as its heat range.

Engine Starting and Operation: Without a functional spark plug, a petrol engine cannot start or run efficiently, as the combustion process cannot be initiated. They are essential for continuous engine operation. 2.

3. Construction of a Spark Plug A typical spark plug is constructed from several key components:

1. Terminal Nut/Cap: The top part where the high-tension lead from the ignition coil connects. It transmits high voltage electricity.

2. Insulator (Ceramic): Made from a high-alumina ceramic material, it electrically insulates the central electrode from the metal casing. It must withstand extreme temperature variations and high voltage without breaking down.

3. Metal Casing/Shell: The outer metallic body, typically steel, which is threaded to screw into the cylinder head. It provides mechanical support and acts as the ground for the spark.

4. Gasket/Sealing Washer: Located between the metal casing and the cylinder head, it ensures a tight seal to prevent combustion gases from escaping and maintains proper heat transfer. Some plugs have tapered seats instead of gaskets.

5. Central Electrode: A conductor typically made of nickel alloy, copper, or precious metals (platinum, iridium). It runs through the insulator and is where the high voltage is applied, leading to the spark.

6. Ground Electrode (Side Electrode): Welded to the metal casing, it forms the other side of the spark gap. The spark jumps between the central and ground electrodes.

7. Spark Gap: The precisely measured distance between the central and ground electrodes. This gap determines the strength and timing of the spark. An incorrect gap can lead to misfires or poor engine performance.

8. Internal Resistor (Optional): Some spark plugs incorporate an internal resistor to suppress radio frequency interference (RFI) that can disrupt vehicle electronics (e.g., car radio, GPS). 2.

4. Differentiating Short-Reach and Long-Reach Plugs (Performance Objective 2) The "reach" of a spark plug refers to the length of its threaded portion that extends into the combustion chamber from the sealing surface. This is a critical dimension that must match the cylinder head's design.

Short-Reach Spark Plugs: Description: Possess a shorter threaded portion. When installed, less of the threaded body extends into the combustion chamber.

Application: Typically found in older engine designs, certain types of smaller engines, or cylinder heads with thinner walls where the spark plug hole is not very deep.

Identification: The threaded section is noticeably shorter compared to long-reach plugs of the same thread diameter. The insulator may appear "shorter" above the threads as well.

Long-Reach Spark Plugs: Description: Have a longer threaded portion. When installed, a greater length of the threaded body extends into the combustion chamber.

Application: Commonly used in modern engines, especially those with multi-valve cylinder heads or thicker cylinder head material, where the spark plug well is deeper.

Identification: The threaded section is significantly longer.

Importance of Correct Reach: Using the wrong spark plug reach can cause severe engine damage: Using a short-reach plug in a long-reach application: The plug's tip will not extend far enough into the combustion chamber, leading to incomplete combustion, misfires, carbon buildup on the threads (making future removal difficult), and poor engine performance. The exposed threads in the cylinder head can also collect carbon, making it difficult to install the correct plug later. * *Using material, where the spark plug well is deeper.

Identification: The threaded section is significantly longer.

Importance of Correct Reach: Using the wrong spark plug reach can cause severe engine damage: Using a short-reach plug in a long-reach application: The plug's tip will not extend far enough into the combustion chamber, leading to incomplete combustion, misfires, carbon buildup on the threads (making future removal difficult), and poor engine performance. The exposed threads in the cylinder head can also collect carbon, making it difficult to install the correct plug later. * Using a long-reach plug in a short-reach application: The plug's tip will protrude too far into the combustion chamber. This can result in the piston striking the spark plug during operation, causing immediate and catastrophic engine damage (e.g., bent or broken piston, damaged valves, compromised spark plug). It can also cause the plug to overheat and pre-ignite the fuel mixture. 2.

5. Spark Plug Gap The spark plug gap is the distance between the central electrode and the ground electrode. This gap is critical for a strong, consistent spark. It is measured using a wire feeler gauge or a disc-type gap tool and can be adjusted by carefully bending the ground electrode. The correct gap specification is provided by the engine manufacturer. 3.

Tools: Spark plug wrench/socket (correct size), ratchet, extension bar, torque wrench (if available), wire brush, spark plug gap gauge.

Steps: Safety First: Ensure the engine is cool (if practical) and the ignition is off. Wear appropriate PPE (gloves).

Locate Plugs: Identify the location of the spark plugs.

Disconnect Wires: Carefully disconnect the high-tension lead or coil-on-plug connector from the spark plug, pulling on the boot, not the wire.

Clean Area: Use a brush or compressed air to clean around the spark plug to prevent debris from falling into the cylinder when removed.

Loosen and Remove: Place the spark plug socket over the plug and use a ratchet to loosen it by turning counter-clockwise. Once loose, unscrew by hand if possible to avoid cross-threading.

This carbon buildup can make it very difficult to install the correct long-reach plug later.

Proper Heat Transfer: The correct reach ensures the plug's tip is positioned optimally for heat dissipation, preventing both overheating (which can cause pre-ignition) and underheating (which can lead to fouling).
