Physical Education Lesson Note - B1 Grade 1 Overview and Learning Objectives Hello, children! Today, we are going to learn about different ways our bodies can move! Moving our bodies helps us stay healthy and strong. It also helps us play games and do fun activities better. We call these different ways of moving "motor skills." Learning these skills will help you in sports, at home, and even when you are helping your family.
Let's learn some important words! Motor Skills: These are movements our bodies do. They help us move around and do things. Locomotor Movements: These are movements that help us travel from one place to another. Imagine you're a bird flying from one tree to another. The movements you would use for flight are similar to locomotor movements. Examples are: Walking: Moving one foot in front of the other, slowly or quickly. Think of walking to school or to the market with your mum. Running: Moving faster than walking, with both feet off the ground for a short time. Think of running to catch a ball or running during a game of Ampe. Hopping: Jumping on one foot. Think of hopping over a puddle after the rain. Skipping: A combination of a hop and a step, usually done with a light and bouncy motion. Imagine skipping to a friend's house! Jumping: Pushing off the ground with both feet and landing again. Non-Locomotor Movements: These are movements that we do while staying in one place. Think of a tree swaying in the wind, but its roots are still holding it to the ground. Examples are: Bending: Folding your body at your waist or knees. Think of bending down to pick up your books. Stretching: Reaching your arms or legs out as far as they can go. Think of stretching your arms when you wake up in the morning. Twisting: Turning your body from side to side. Think of twisting your body to look behind you. Swinging: Moving your arms or legs back and forth in a curved motion. Think of swinging your arms while walking or running.
Worked Examples: Imagine you are going to your grandma's house. You walk part of the way, then you run when you see her house to get there faster. What locomotor movements did you use? Answer: You used walking and running. You are helping your mother pound fufu. You have to twist your body and bend your knees slightly. What non-locomotor movements are you using? Answer: You are using twisting and bending. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Let's practice! Follow the instructions carefully. Question: Stand in place. Now, stretch your arms up high like you are reaching for a mango on a tree. What type of movement are you doing? Solution: Stretching (Non-Locomotor) Commentary: This checks if the child can identify a basic non-locomotor movement. Question: Walk five steps forward, then hop on one foot three times. What locomotor movements did you do? Solution: Walking and Hopping Commentary: This combines two locomotor movements, testing if the child can distinguish them. Question: Pretend you are sweeping the floor. Swing your arms from side to side and bend your body slightly. What types of movements are you doing? Solution: Swinging (Non-Locomotor) and Bending (Non-Locomotor). Commentary: This involves applying movements in a real-life context and identifying the types. Question: Run to the other side of the classroom, then twist your body to look at the wall behind you. What types of movements did you do? Solution: Running (Locomotor) and Twisting (Non-Locomotor). Commentary: Combining locomotor and non-locomotor movements. Independent Practice (Questions Only)
Now it's your turn to try some on your own! Stand up and pretend to be a bird. Fly around the room. What kind of movement are you doing? Pretend you are picking up a heavy bag from the ground. What movement are you using when you bend down? Jump up and down five times. What kind of movement is this? You are waving goodbye to your friend. What kind of movement are your arms doing? Hop on your right foot three times, then on your left foot three times. What type of movement are you doing? Imagine you are stirring a pot of soup. What movement are you doing with your arms? Walk five steps forward, then bend down and touch your toes. What movements did you do? Skip around the room. What kind of movement are you doing? Twist your body to the right and then to the left. What kind of movement are you doing? Combine hopping and swinging your arms. Describe what you are doing using the words we learned today.
