Lesson summary

Hello, young mathematicians! Today, we are going to embark on an exciting adventure into the world of Geometry and Measurement! This is Strand 33, and we will be learning about shapes and how to measure different things around us. Understanding shapes and measurements is important because it helps us describe and understand the world around us, from the classroom we sit in, to the food we eat, and the clothes we wear. You see these ideas everywhere in our Ghanaian community!

What is Geometry?

Geometry is the study of shapes and their properties. We see shapes everywhere! Think about the chalkboard in our classroom, the football we play with, and even the roof of your house.

Basic 2D Shapes: Circle: A circle is a round shape. It has no corners and no straight sides. Think of the sun, a plate, or a 'bole' (ball). Square: A square has four equal sides and four corners. All the corners are the same (right angles). Think of a checkerboard or a tile on the floor. Triangle: A triangle has three sides and three corners. Think of the Ghanaian flag (the star in the middle is a triangle) or a slice of watermelon. Rectangle: A rectangle has four sides and four corners. Opposite sides are equal in length. A square is a special type of rectangle. Think of a door, a book, or a chalkboard.
