Science Lesson Note: Grade 3 Overview and Learning Objectives Hello Class 3! Today, we are starting a new and important topic called "Humans and the Environment." This is all about how we, as humans, interact with the world around us – the land, the water, the plants, and the animals. It's crucial because understanding this relationship helps us take better care of our environment and ensure a healthy future for Ghana.
What is the Environment?
The environment is everything around us. It includes the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we walk on, the plants that grow, and the animals that live. It’s our surroundings – our homes, schools, farms, and even the whole of Ghana!
How Do Humans Affect the Environment?
Humans have a big impact on the environment. Our actions can be both helpful and harmful. Helpful Actions: Planting Trees: Trees clean the air and provide shade. Planting trees helps to improve the environment. Imagine planting a mango tree in your backyard. It gives you fruits to eat and provides shade from the hot sun. Cleaning Up Litter: Picking up rubbish and keeping our surroundings clean prevents pollution and keeps our environment healthy. Think about cleaning up the litter around your school compound. Conserving Water: Using water wisely by turning off the tap when brushing our teeth or collecting rainwater for watering plants. Recycling: Sorting out waste like paper, plastic, and glass so they can be made into new things. Using Renewable Energy: Choosing to use energy from sources like the sun (solar power) or wind instead of burning fossil fuels (like petrol). Although not something primary school kids directly control, understanding this concept is important. Harmful Actions: Cutting Down Trees (Deforestation): When we cut down too many trees without replanting, it leads to soil erosion, loss of animal habitats, and climate change. Think about the forests in Ghana being cleared for farming or timber. Polluting Water: Throwing rubbish into rivers and streams or releasing harmful chemicals into water sources makes the water unsafe for drinking and harms aquatic life. Imagine people throwing plastic waste into the Densu River. Burning Rubbish: Burning rubbish releases harmful smoke and gases into the air, polluting the air we breathe. Hunting Animals to Extinction: Over hunting of some animal species in Ghana.
