This lesson introduces learners to the multiplication of larger numbers (2-digit and 3-digit) by a single-digit number. In our daily lives in Ghana, we often need to calculate the total cost of multiple items at the market, figure out the total number of people who can sit in a church or at a festival, or even calculate savings over several weeks. Multiplication is the fast and clever way to do this instead of adding the same number over and over again. This skill is a building block for more complex mathematics and is essential for everyday problem-solving.

Teacher's Note: Begin by revising basic multiplication facts (times tables) up to 9. A quick oral drill will activate prior knowledge. Concept 1: What is Multiplication?

Multiplication is a fast way to do repeated addition. For example, if you buy 4 loaves of bread and each costs GHS 3, you can calculate the total cost by adding: GHS 3 + GHS 3 + GHS 3 + GHS 3 = GHS 12. Or, you can simply multiply: 4 loaves × GHS 3 per loaf = GHS 12. We call the numbers being multiplied factors and the answer the product. Concept 2: The Importance of Place Value

Before we multiply bigger numbers, we must remember our place values. In the number 345: The 5 is in the Ones place (value = 5) The 4 is in the Tens place (value = 40) The 3 is in the Hundreds place (value = 300) So, 345 is really 300 + 40 + 5. Understanding this helps us multiply correctly. Concept 3: Multiplying a 2-Digit Number by a 1-Digit Number

Let's solve: 36 x 4. This means we are adding 36 four times (36 + 36 + 36 + 36). Let's use two methods.
