Class: Basic 5 Assumed Indicator: B5.1.1.1. Demonstrate understanding of movement concepts such as space awareness, effort, and relationships in performing physical activities.
This lesson focuses on the three core building blocks of all movement. Let's break them down. Concept 1: SPACE AWARENESS (Where the body moves)
Space is the area where we move. To be a good mover, you must be aware of the space around you. We can think about space in three main ways: Levels: This is about how high or low your body is. High Level: Moving with your body stretched up tall. Reaching for the sky. *Ghanaian Example:* Reaching up to pick a mango from a high branch. Jumping high during ampe. Medium Level: Moving when you are standing or walking normally, at about waist height. *Ghanaian Example:* Carrying a bucket of water on your head. Passing a football to a friend. Low Level: Moving with your body close to the ground. *Ghanaian Example:* Weeding the school garden. Crawling like a baby or a lizard. Pathways: This is the "road" or "track" your body follows as you move through space. Straight: Moving in a direct line without turning. Like a soldier marching. Curved: Moving in a rounded or circular path. Like running around a football field corner. Zigzag: Moving in a series of sharp turns from side to side. Like a snake moving through grass. Personal vs. General Space: Personal Space: This is your own "bubble" that you can reach without moving your feet. It moves with you. General Space: This is all the available space in the room or field that you can move through. Concept 2: EFFORT (How the body moves)
Effort is about the energy you use to move. It's the "how" of your movement. Time: This is about the speed of your movement. Fast/Sudden: Quick movements. *Example: Sprinting to the finish line, a quick clap.* Slow/Sustained: Movements that take a long time. *Example: Walking slowly like a chameleon, stretching gently.* Force: This is about how much strength or power you use. Strong/Firm: Movements done with a lot of muscle power. *Example: Stamping your foot hard during a cultural dance. Pushing a heavy desk.* Light/Fine: Gentle movements. *Example: Tiptoeing past a sleeping person. Tapping a friend gently on the shoulder.* Concept 3: RELATIONSHIPS (With whom or what the body moves)
This concept describes how your body is positioned or how it moves in connection to other people or objects. Relationship with Objects: Over/Under: Jumping *over* a rope, crawling *under* a table. Around: Running *around* a tree. Through: Passing *through* a doorway or a hoop. Near/Far: Standing *near* the wall, then moving *far* from it. Relationship with People: Leading/Following: In a line, one person leads, and the others follow exactly what they do. Mirroring: Facing a partner and doing the exact opposite of their movement, like looking in a mirror. If they raise their right hand, you raise your left hand. Side-by-side: Moving next to a partner, going in the same direction. Alone/In a group: Performing a movement by yourself or as part of a team.
