This lesson introduces learners to the exciting world of algebra, which is like being a detective for numbers. In our daily lives in Ghana, we often face situations where we need to find a missing number. For example, when a seller at Makola Market calculates your change, or when you try to figure out how many more points your favourite football team needs to win the league, you are using the basic ideas of algebra. This lesson will teach us how to represent these real-life puzzles with mathematics and find the "mystery number" using a step-by-step method.
Concept 1: What are Variables, Expressions, and Equations? Variable: A variable is a letter (like `x`, `y`, or `k`) that is used to represent a number we do not know yet. Think of it as a mystery box or an empty `susu` box. We know it holds a value, but we need to do some detective work to find out what it is. Expression: A mathematical phrase that combines numbers, variables, and operation signs (+, -, ×, ÷). An expression does not have an equals sign. Examples: `x + 5`, `3y`, `4k + 2`. Equation: A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal. An equation always has an equals sign (`=`). The most important idea of an equation is balance. What is on the left side of the equals sign must have the same value as what is on the right side. *Analogy:* Think of a balance scale used for selling gari or sugar in the market. For the scale to be level, the weight on the left must be exactly the same as the weight on the right. Concept 2: Solving Linear Equations of the form `ax + b = c`
We will learn to solve these equations using the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach, which is central to the NaCCA curriculum.
