In our daily lives in Ghana, we are surrounded by information, or 'data'. We see it in the news when they talk about rainfall patterns, on market price boards showing the cost of yam tubers, or even in our school when we see the results of inter-house sports competitions. Being able to understand this information when it is presented in charts and graphs is a very important skill. It helps us make sense of the world, compare information quickly, and make smart decisions. This lesson will teach us how to be data detectives—to read and understand the stories that charts and graphs tell us.
What is Data Interpretation? Data interpretation is the skill of reading and understanding information that has been collected and organised into a visual form, like a chart or a graph. It's like reading a story, but the story is told with bars, pictures, or slices of a circle instead of words. A. The Bar Chart (or Bar Graph) A bar chart uses rectangular bars to show data. The height or length of the bar shows the value or number for that category.
Parts of a Bar Chart: Title: Tells you what the chart is about. Vertical Axis (Y-axis): The line that goes up. It usually has numbers and is called the scale. Horizontal Axis (X-axis): The line that goes across the bottom. It shows the different categories or items being compared. Labels: Words that tell you what the axes and bars represent. Bars: The rectangles that show the actual data.
