Lesson summary

In our daily lives in Ghana, we often hear very large numbers. We hear about the population of countries like Nigeria or India, the cost of big government projects like the Pokuase Interchange, or the national budget announced by the Minister of Finance. These numbers are often in the millions and billions. Understanding how to read, write, and visualise these huge numbers is a very important skill. It helps us make sense of the world, understand the news, and appreciate the scale of major events. This lesson will focus on understanding numbers greater than one billion.

Lesson notes

A. The Place Value Chart (Up to Billions)

To understand large numbers, we must first understand their place value. Our number system is based on ten, and the position of a digit determines its value. Let's extend the place value chart we know to include billions.

Numbers are grouped into periods. Each period has three place values: Ones, Tens, and Hundreds.

| BILLIONS PERIOD | MILLIONS PERIOD | THOUSANDS PERIOD | UNITS/ONES PERIOD | | :--------------------- | :--------------------- | :------------------- | :-------------------- | | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | | HB | TB | B | HM | TM | M | HTh | TTh | Th | H | T | O |
