In our daily lives in Ghana, we are constantly faced with numbers in different forms. At the market, a seller might offer a discount as "20% off," while another says "take GH₵0.50 off every GH₵2.00." When you write a test, your teacher might give your score as 40/50. Which is a better discount? What is your score as a percentage? This lesson is crucial because it gives us the tools to understand and compare these different ways of representing parts of a whole. By learning to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages, we can make smarter decisions about money, understand our academic performance better, and solve many real-world problems.
The Challenge: Comparing Different Forms Imagine your friend Kofi scored 17/20 on a Maths test, and you, Ama, scored 82% on the same test. Who performed better? It's difficult to tell immediately because the scores are in different forms (a common fraction and a percentage).
To compare them, we need to convert them into the same form. The easiest way is to convert all numbers to either decimals or percentages.
Method 1: Converting Everything to Decimals (The Most Reliable Method)
This is often the simplest and most direct method for comparison. Common Fraction to Decimal: Divide the numerator by the denominator. *Example:* Convert 3/4 to a decimal. Calculation: `3 ÷ 4 = 0.75` Percentage to Decimal: Divide the percentage by 100 (or simply move the decimal point two places to the left). *Example:* Convert 65% to a decimal. Calculation: `65 ÷ 100 = 0.65`
