Animal production is the rearing and management of animals for human benefit. In Ghana, many homes keep animals like goats, sheep, chickens, and rabbits for domestic (home) use, while farms and companies rear animals for commercial (business) use. Understanding these two uses helps learners appreciate how animals support nutrition, income, employment, culture, and national development.
A. Meaning of Key Terms 1) Animal Production Animal production is the rearing, breeding, feeding, housing, and health care of animals to obtain useful products and services such as meat, eggs, milk, manure, hides/skins, and income. 2) Domestic Use of Animals (Home/Family Use) Domestic use means keeping or using animals mainly to meet the needs of the household rather than for large-scale sale.
Key idea: The animal or its products are used mostly by the family (though small sales may happen sometimes).
Examples in Ghana A family in Tamale keeps guinea fowls for eggs and meat during festivals. A household in Ho keeps goats for family meat and for traditional ceremonies. A home in Kumasi keeps local chickens for soup when someone is sick. 3) Commercial Use of Animals (Business/Income Use) Commercial use means keeping animals mainly to produce goods and services for sale to make profit.
Key idea: The main aim is income generation and business growth.
