In our daily life in Ghana, we depend on solid materials for shelter, farming, cooking, transport, health, and even the survival of plants and animals. Examples include soil for growing crops, rocks and sand for building, wood for furniture and roofing, and metals for tools and machines. Understanding the importance of specific solids to life helps us to use materials wisely, reduce waste, and preserve useful solid resources in the environment.
2.1 What is a Solid? A solid is a state of matter that: has a fixed shape has a fixed volume is usually hard or firm does not flow like liquids
Examples around us: stone, wood, iron nail, plastic bottle, chalk, soil (as a solid material), glass cup.
> Note: Some solids like powdered substances (flour, cement, sand) can pour, but each grain is still a solid.
2.2 “Specific solids” and why they matter to life “Specific solids” means particular solid materials that are important for living things. We look at how they support: human survival plant growth animal habitats health and safety economic activities
