This lesson introduces the concept of "Technology in the Community." We will explore what technology means, going beyond just phones and computers. Technology is all around us in Ghana, from the Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor on the street corner to the traffic lights in Accra, the solar panel on a roof in the village, and the laptop we use in school. Understanding these tools helps us become better problem-solvers and active participants in our modern world. By the end of this lesson, we will see how these tools make our lives easier, more connected, and full of learning opportunities.
What is Technology?
Many people think "technology" only means computers, smartphones, or the internet. But it is much broader than that! Simple Definition: Technology is any tool, machine, or system created by humans to solve a problem or make a task easier.
Think about it this way: A farmer in the village uses a cutlass to clear weeds. The cutlass is a tool that solves the problem of overgrown weeds. Therefore, a cutlass is a form of technology. Someone wants to pound fufu. They use a pestle and mortar. These tools make the task of mashing yam or plantain easier. This is also technology!
So, technology can be simple (like a pencil) or very complex (like a satellite). In this lesson, we will focus more on modern, electronic technology, often called Information and Communication Technology (ICT). ICT Definition: ICT refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. It is like a special category of technology that includes computers, the internet, mobile phones, and other communication devices. Five Examples of Technology in Our Community
