This lesson builds on our previous knowledge of addition and subtraction from Primary school. We will now focus on larger numbers, specifically numbers with up to four digits (i.e., numbers in the thousands). This skill is essential for our everyday lives in Ghana. Whether we are calculating the total cost of items at Makola Market, figuring out the total yield of cocoa from a farm in kilograms, or even calculating distances between cities like Accra and Tamale, addition and subtraction of large numbers are skills we use constantly. Mastering this will help us make smart decisions with money and understand the world around us better.
A. Understanding Place Value Before we add or subtract, we must remember our place value. For a 4-digit number like 6,854, each digit has a specific value:
| Thousands (Th) | Hundreds (H) | Tens (T) | Ones (O) | | :------------: | :----------: | :------: | :------: | | 6 | 8 | 5 | 4 | The 4 is in the Ones place (value = 4) The 5 is in the Tens place (value = 50) The 8 is in the Hundreds place (value = 800) The 6 is in the Thousands place (value = 6,000)
When we add or subtract, we MUST align the numbers vertically according to their place value. Ones under Ones, Tens under Tens, and so on. B. Addition of Four-Digit Numbers Addition is combining two or more numbers to find their total, or sum.
Example 1: Addition without Regrouping (Carrying) *Problem:* A school has 1,452 boys and 1,236 girls. How many students are in the school altogether?
