This lesson introduces the concept of ratios, which is a fundamental mathematical tool for comparing quantities. Ratios are all around us in our daily Ghanaian lives – from the way our mothers mix ingredients for *sobolo* or *shito*, to how a mason mixes cement and sand to build a house, or even how we compare the number of wins to losses for our favourite football team like Asante Kotoko or Accra Hearts of Oak. By understanding ratios, we learn a new way to describe and understand the world around us mathematically. This lesson will focus on what ratios are, how to write them, and how to use special "ratio language" to explain the relationship between different amounts.

A. What is a Ratio?

A ratio is a way of comparing two or more quantities of the same kind. This means we compare things that can be measured in the same way. For example, we can compare the number of boys to the number of girls (both are people), or the number of exercise books to the number of textbooks (both are books). We cannot, however, create a meaningful ratio of the number of boys to the temperature in the room.
