Lesson summary

Physical fitness helps us do daily activities without getting overly tired and still have energy left for schoolwork, chores, sports and play. In Ghana, many learners walk long distances, carry water, sweep compounds, help at the market, farm, fish, or play football and ampe. These activities require muscular strength (how strong your muscles are) and muscular endurance (how long your muscles can keep working). Learning safe ways to build strength and endurance helps learners prevent injuries, improve posture, and perform better in games and daily chores.

Lesson notes

A. Meaning of Physical Fitness (Focus Area) Physical fitness is the ability of the body to work efficiently and effectively in physical activities and daily life. Today’s focus is on muscular strength and muscular endurance.

B. Muscular Strength Muscular strength is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert maximum force in one effort or a few efforts. Example (Ghanaian context): Lifting a bucket of water from the ground to your head (one strong effort). Carrying a heavy bag of maize for a short distance. Pushing a wheelbarrow with sand for a short push.

How to train strength (basic idea): Use heavier resistance with fewer repetitions. Example: 6–10 controlled squats with a school bag (light load) *only if safe and supervised*.

C. Muscular Endurance Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to keep working for a long time without getting tired. Example (Ghanaian context): Sweeping a large compound continuously. Pounding fufu for several minutes. Pulling fishing rope repeatedly at the seashore. Carrying light items at the market for a longer time.
