Lesson summary

This lesson introduces the concept of the mean, which is a way to find the 'average' of a set of numbers. We use averages every day in Ghana, even if we don't use the word "mean". For example, we might talk about the average price of plantain in the market, the average score in a class test, or the average number of goals scored by the Black Stars in a tournament. Understanding how to calculate the mean helps us make sense of information, make better decisions, and summarize data into a single, useful number.

Lesson notes

A. What is Ungrouped Data?

When we collect information, we get a list of numbers or facts. This is called data. Ungrouped data is simply a list of individual values. It has not been sorted into groups or tables. Example: The number of exercise books five JHS 1 learners have: 8, 12, 7, 10, 8. This is ungrouped data. B. What is the Mean?

The mean is what we commonly call the average. It is a single value that represents the central point or typical value of a set of numbers.

Imagine you and your friends have different amounts of pocket money for the week: GH¢5, GH¢7, GH¢6, and GH¢6. If you put all the money together and share it equally among the four of you, the amount each person gets is the mean. C. The Formula for Calculating the Mean
