Organised sports and physical activity participation means taking part in planned games, competitions, and exercise sessions that have rules, roles, safety measures, and fair play. In Ghana, learners meet organised sports in school (inter-house sports, PE lessons, school teams), community (colts football, keep-fit clubs), and cultural settings (traditional games and festivals). Understanding movement concepts, principles, and strategies helps learners perform skills better, avoid injuries, include everyone (including learners with different abilities), and build confidence and teamwork.
A. What is “Organised Sports and Physical Activity Participation”? Organised sports are planned physical activities with: Rules (what is allowed/not allowed) Structure (teams/individuals, time, scoring) Roles (captain, referee, scorer, timekeeper) Safety measures (warm-up, safe space, equipment checks) Fair play (respect, honesty, inclusion)
Examples in Ghanaian schools/communities Inter-house athletics (100 m, relays) School football/netball/volleyball teams Table tennis, badminton Target games: throwing beanbags into a bucket, local archery (safe adapted version), darts (soft-tip), ring toss
B. Movement Concepts (How the body moves) Movement concepts help learners understand *how to move* effectively. 1) Space (Where you move) Direction: forward, backward, sideways, diagonal Level: low (crouch), medium (standing), high (jump/reach) Pathway: straight, curved, zigzag Size of movement: big steps vs small steps Personal space vs general space: your own area vs shared playing area
Example (Target throw into a bucket): Stand behind a line (space boundary). Adjust distance: closer for beginners, farther for advanced learners. Use a straight pathway for the throwing arm towards the target. 2) Dynamics / Effort (How you apply force and speed) Force: light vs strong Speed: slow vs fast Control: smooth vs jerky Timing: releasing at the right moment
