Lesson summary

In Ghana, many families grow crops like maize, pepper, tomato, okro, cabbage, onion, rice and garden eggs. Before planting, farmers prepare seed beds to help seeds germinate well, reduce weeds, control water, and make seedlings strong. Knowing the different seed beds and when to use each one helps learners make better choices for school gardens, home gardens, and future farming/business.

Lesson notes

2.1 Meaning of Seed Bed A seed bed is a prepared area of soil where seeds are sown or seedlings are raised before transplanting. It can be on the ground (flat), above ground level (raised), below ground level (sunken), or shaped into ridges/mounds.

Why we prepare seed beds To make soil fine and loose for easy germination. To remove stones, stumps, weeds and pests. To help control water (avoid waterlogging or conserve moisture). To make weeding and watering easier. To produce healthy seedlings for transplanting (nursery).

2.2 Types of Seed Beds and Their Uses A. Flat Bed (Level Bed) Description: Soil is prepared and left level with the surrounding ground. Where suitable: Areas with moderate rainfall and well-drained soil. Advantages: Easy to prepare and maintain. Suitable for many crops that do not need special water control. Disadvantages: Can become waterlogged if drainage is poor. Can dry out quickly in very hot/dry periods.

Common crops: maize (direct sowing), cowpea, groundnut, some vegetables.
