Lesson summary

In today's digital world, sharing ideas powerfully is a key skill. Presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint allows us to do this. A presentation with only text can be boring. Pictures, however, make our ideas come alive! They grab attention, explain complex concepts, and make our message more memorable. Imagine you are presenting a project on Ghana's independence; a picture of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declaring independence will be far more powerful than just words. Or, if you are explaining how to use a mobile money app to your grandmother, a screenshot of the app's screen will be very helpful.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on using the Images Group found on the Insert Tab of most presentation software (we will use Microsoft PowerPoint as our main example). This group contains all the tools we need to add visuals to our slides.

*(Teacher Note: It is highly recommended to project the PowerPoint interface for learners to see this visually).* A. The Images Group When you click on the Insert tab at the top of the PowerPoint window, you will see a section of tools called a "group." The Images group is where we find options like `Pictures`, `Online Pictures`, and `Screenshot`. B. Inserting a Picture from Your Computer ("This Device") This is used when the picture you want to use is already saved on the computer, a pen drive, or a phone connected to the computer.

Steps: Click on the Insert tab on the ribbon. In the Images group, click on Pictures. A dropdown menu may appear. Choose This Device.... A new window called the Insert Picture dialog box will open. This is like a file explorer. Navigate to the folder where your picture is saved (e.g., Desktop, Documents, or a specific project folder). Click on the picture file you want to insert. Click the Insert button at the bottom right of the window. The picture will now appear on your slide.

Ghanaian Context Example: Imagine your teacher asked you to create a presentation about Ghanaian festivals. You attended the Hogbetsotso festival and your father took pictures with his camera and saved them on the school computer. You would use the "Insert > Pictures > This Device..." method to add those festival pictures to your slides. C. Inserting Online Pictures (Modern Clip Art) In the past, PowerPoint had a feature called "Clip Art," which was a library of simple drawings. Today, this has been replaced by "Online Pictures," which allows you to search the entire internet (using Microsoft's Bing search engine) for pictures without leaving PowerPoint. This is very useful when you don't have a picture saved on your computer.
