Lesson summary

Physical fitness helps learners to be strong, active, and healthy for school work, chores at home, sports, and daily movement (walking to school, carrying water, farming activities, sweeping, etc.). In JHS2, learners must participate in activities that build muscular strength and muscular endurance so they can perform tasks safely, reduce injuries, and improve posture and confidence. A. Meaning of Physical Fitness (focus for this lesson) Physical fitness is the ability of the body to do daily activities with energy and without getting too tired, and still have strength left for emergencies and enjoyment.

This lesson focuses on two components: Muscular Strength Muscular Endurance B. Muscular Strength Muscular strength is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to exert maximum force in a single effort or a few efforts.

Examples in Ghanaian life Lifting a bucket of water onto a stand. Carrying a bag of maize or rice for a short distance. Pushing a wheelbarrow with sand.

Typical training style Fewer repetitions (e.g., 4–10 reps) More effort per rep Longer rest (e.g., 30–60 seconds) C. Muscular Endurance Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to keep working for a long time without getting tired.
