Lesson summary

Physical fitness helps us to work, learn, play and stay healthy without getting tired too quickly. In Ghana, many JHS learners walk to school, help at home, play football, dance at church or school events, and sometimes do chores like fetching water or sweeping. These activities need a strong heart and lungs. Today’s lesson focuses on cardiorespiratory activities (activities that make the heart beat faster and breathing deeper) and how to participate at varying levels (light, moderate, vigorous) while setting goals and recording progress.

Lesson notes

A. Meaning of Physical Fitness (focus on cardiorespiratory) Physical fitness is the ability of the body to do daily activities with energy and without undue fatigue. It has different components, but today we focus on: Cardiorespiratory fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance): The ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to supply oxygen to working muscles during activity for a long time.

Why it matters: Helps you run, walk, play football, dance, and do chores without getting tired quickly. Reduces risk of lifestyle diseases later (high blood pressure, diabetes). Improves concentration and mood.

B. Cardiorespiratory Activities (Examples in Ghanaian context) Cardiorespiratory activities are continuous activities that raise heart rate and breathing.

Examples: Brisk walking (e.g., walking fast to school) Jogging/running (around the school field) Skipping with rope Cycling (bike riding) Swimming (where safe and available) Aerobic dance (Azonto-style aerobic steps, school aerobics) Small-sided games (3v3 or 5v5 football, basketball) Stair climbing (safe steps)
