Lesson summary

Energy is what makes things work—lighting our homes, cooking food, charging phones, pumping water, and moving vehicles. In Ghana, we use energy from hydro (Akosombo), thermal plants (gas/oil), solar panels, charcoal/firewood, and more. Understanding renewable and non-renewable energy helps learners make wise choices that protect the environment, reduce costs, and support national development (stable electricity, cleaner air, and jobs).

Lesson notes

A. What is Energy? Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Examples in daily life: A phone battery powering a phone (electrical energy). Charcoal burning to cook (chemical energy → heat). Water falling at a dam turning turbines (gravitational potential energy → kinetic → electrical).

B. Sources of Energy A source of energy is anything we can use to produce useful energy (heat, electricity, motion).

Energy sources are grouped into: Renewable sources Non-renewable sources

C. Renewable Energy (Definition + Features) Renewable energy comes from sources that are naturally replaced in a short time (days, months, years) and can be used repeatedly.
