This lesson focuses on the first and most exciting step in the design process: generating ideas. In our communities, from the market woman who arranges her yams creatively to the carpenter who designs a new style of chair, good ideas are the foundation of all successful products and solutions. We will learn structured techniques to brainstorm and create many possible solutions to a problem, rather than just settling for the first idea that comes to mind. This skill is crucial for becoming an innovator, an entrepreneur, and a problem-solver in our Ghanaian society.
A. Why Generate Many Ideas?
When we face a problem, our first idea is often the most obvious and least creative. Imagine being asked to design a new school bag. Your first idea might be just like your current bag, but in a different colour. Is that the best solution? Probably not.
By generating many ideas (a process called ideation), we can: Explore different possibilities: We might discover a completely new and better way to solve the problem. Increase creativity: It forces our brains to think beyond the ordinary. Find the best solution: With many options to choose from, we can compare, combine, and select the most effective, affordable, or practical solution.
Think of it like a fisherman casting a wide net instead of a single line. A wide net catches more fish, giving the fisherman more choices.
