In our daily lives in Ghana, we are surrounded by information. We hear about the prices of goods at the market, the results of the latest Black Stars football match, the most popular musicians, and the number of people living in our communities. All this information is called data. Understanding data is the first step to making sense of the world around us. In this lesson, we will learn about the two main types of data, which will help us to organise and analyse information better, whether it's for school projects, business, or just making informed decisions.
What is Data?
Data is a collection of facts, figures, or information gathered for a purpose. Think of it as raw information before it is organised. Example: If we ask everyone in the class their favourite subject, the list of subjects we get (Mathematics, English, Science, RME, etc.) is data. Example: If we measure the height of every student in the class, the list of heights (155 cm, 160 cm, 152 cm, etc.) is also data.
Today, we will focus on the two main ways we can classify this information. The Two Main Types of Data
All data can be sorted into two main groups: Categorical Data and Numerical Data.
