Lesson summary

In Ghana, many JHS learners take part in football, athletics, ampe, school sports, chores (fetching water, farming), and practical subjects. Injuries like sprains, strains, cuts, nosebleeds, burns, and dislocations can happen at school, home, or in the community. Knowing effective injury management procedures helps learners to: prevent injuries from getting worse, reduce pain and swelling, avoid infection and complications, know when and how to seek medical help quickly.

Lesson notes

2.1 Meaning of First Aid First aid is the immediate care given to an injured or suddenly ill person before professional medical help arrives. Aims of First Aid (simple to remember) Preserve life (keep the person alive). Prevent the condition from worsening (stop bleeding, prevent shock). Promote recovery (reduce swelling, protect injured part). Relieve pain (safe comfort measures). Protect the casualty and the helper (avoid infection, avoid danger).

2.2 General Rules Before Managing Any Injury (DRSAB) Before touching the injured person, follow a safe approach: D – Danger: Check the area (ball field, road, broken glass, electricity). Do not become a second casualty. R – Response: Ask: “Are you okay?” Check if the person responds. S – Send for help: Call a teacher, school nurse, parent, or 112/193 (Ghana emergency lines may vary by area; use available local emergency contacts). A – Airway: Ensure the airway is open (if trained). B – Breathing: Check breathing (if trained).

> In PE class, most injuries are not life-threatening, but danger check and calling for help are always important.

2.3 Injury Prevention (Quick but important) Injury prevention means reducing the chance of injury before it happens.
