Many diseases affecting Ghanaian adolescents and adults are linked to sedentary lifestyle (too much sitting, little movement) and physical inactivity. These include obesity, high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, some heart diseases, and even stress-related conditions. In JHS, learners often sit for long hours in class, at home doing homework, or on phones/TV. This lesson helps learners create and perform safe physical activities that can lower disease risks and build lifelong healthy habits.
A. Meaning of Disease Prevention and Management (in this lesson) Disease prevention: actions taken to stop diseases from occurring (e.g., regular exercise to prevent obesity and hypertension). Disease management: actions taken to control a condition and reduce complications (e.g., exercise and diet to manage diabetes, under guidance).

B. Sedentary Behaviour vs Physical Inactivity Sedentary behaviour: activities done while sitting or lying down with very low energy use. Examples: sitting for long hours, watching TV, scrolling on phone, playing video games, sitting in a trotro for long distances. Physical inactivity: not doing enough physical activity to meet health needs (e.g., not reaching regular moderate activity most days).
Why it matters: Too much sitting + little exercise can lead to weight gain, weak heart and lungs, poor blood circulation, and poor mental health.
