Physical fitness helps learners stay healthy, active, and ready for daily life in Ghana—walking long distances, climbing stairs, helping at home, playing football/netball, and concentrating well in class. In JHS3, learners also face academic pressure; cardiorespiratory strength and endurance (fitness of the heart and lungs) supports better energy levels, reduces tiredness, and helps prevent lifestyle diseases (e.g., high blood pressure, obesity) later in life. This lesson focuses on participating in cardiorespiratory strength and endurance activities, setting goals, and recording performance in a simple log/journal—aligned to Indicator B9.2.2.2.1.
A. Meaning of Physical Fitness (focus area) Physical fitness is the ability of the body to work efficiently and effectively during daily activities and sports, without getting overly tired, and still having energy left.
Physical fitness has components, but today we focus on: Cardiorespiratory strength: how strong and efficient the heart is in pumping blood. Cardiorespiratory endurance: how long the heart, lungs, and muscles can keep working during continuous activity (e.g., running, skipping, cycling).
Simple explanation: If you can jog, play small-sided football, or skip for longer without stopping, your cardiorespiratory endurance is improving.
B. How the Body Works During Endurance Activity When you do activities like brisk walking, jogging, or skipping: Muscles need energy. Energy production needs oxygen. The lungs take in oxygen. The heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to muscles. With regular training, the heart and lungs become more efficient: You breathe better You recover faster You can exercise longer
