Organised sports and physical activity participation means taking part in planned games and exercises with rules, roles, and safety procedures—such as school football, netball, handball, basketball, athletics, and community leagues. In Ghana, organised sports help learners build fitness, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and confidence. They also teach safe movement skills that reduce injuries during PE lessons, inter-schools competitions, and community games (e.g., gala, inter-house sports, Colts football).
A. Meaning of Organised Sports and Physical Activity Participation Organised sports: Planned physical activities with: Rules (how to play, scoring, fouls) Roles (captain, referee, timekeeper, scorer) Structure (training, fixtures, competition) Safety measures (warm-up, cool-down, safe equipment)
Physical activity participation: How often and how well a learner takes part—regularly, safely, and with effort.
Why it matters: Improves fitness (endurance, strength, flexibility) Builds social skills (teamwork, respect, leadership) Supports mental health (stress reduction, confidence) Creates pathways for school representation and talent development
B. Movement Concepts (What to think about when moving) Movement concepts help you move efficiently and effectively in games. Space (Where to move) Open space: area with no defender close by. Creating space: moving away from defenders to receive a pass. Using width and depth: spreading out to make the field bigger for opponents to defend.
