This first week's lesson introduces learners to the foundational pre-number skill of sorting and classifying. Sorting is about putting things that are the same together into groups. This is a skill we use every day in Ghana. We see our mothers at the market sorting red tomatoes from green ones, or we help at home by putting all the spoons in one place and all the forks in another. By learning to sort, children begin to see patterns and relationships in the world around them, which is the very first step to understanding numbers. This lesson will be hands-on, using familiar objects from our environment to make learning fun and meaningful.
This lesson focuses on two main ideas: Sorting and Attributes.
Concept 1: What is Sorting? Sorting (or classifying) means putting things into groups based on something they have in common. It is organising things so that all the items in one group are the same in some way. Teacher's Explanation: "My dear learners, look at my table. I have crayons, and I have blocks. They are all mixed up! It looks messy. Sorting means we will make it neat. We will put all the crayons together in one box, and all the blocks together in another box. We are putting things that are the same together. That is sorting!"
Concept 2: What is an Attribute? An attribute is a special quality or feature of an object that we can see or feel. It is the "rule" we use for sorting. For KG1, we will focus on three simple attributes: a) Colour: This is often the easiest attribute for young learners to understand. Explanation: "Look at these bottle caps. This one is red. This one is blue. And this one is also red. Red and blue are colours. Colour is a special way we can sort things."
