Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to their own bodies. Knowing our body parts and how they move is the first step towards physical literacy, health, and safety. In our Ghanaian context, this knowledge is essential for everything from playing games like *ampe* and dancing *adowa*, to following instructions at home like "use your hands to wash the bowl," to keeping ourselves clean and healthy. This lesson is designed to be active, fun, and engaging, using songs, games, and movement to build a strong foundation.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on learning through doing. The explanations should be accompanied by demonstrations from the teacher and immediate imitation by the learners.

Concept 1: Our Amazing Body Parts Our body is made of many parts, and each part has a special job. We will learn about some of these parts today. Head: (Teacher points to their head) This is our head. It is at the very top of our body. Our brain, which helps us to think, is inside our head. Our eyes, ears, nose, and mouth are also on our head. Hands: (Teacher wiggles their fingers) These are our hands. We have two hands. We use our hands to hold things like our pencils and spoons, to wave to our friends, to clap when we are happy, and to help with chores like sweeping. Legs: (Teacher pats their legs) These are our legs. We have two legs. Our legs help us to stand up tall, to walk to the classroom, to run outside, and to kick a ball when we play football. Toes: (Teacher points to their toes) These little parts at the end of our feet are called toes. They help us to balance when we stand and walk.

Concept 2: How Our Body Moves Our body can move in many wonderful ways. Some movements take us from one place to another, and some we can do while standing in one spot. Locomotor Movements (Moving Around): Walking: This is how we move from place to place every day. We put one foot in front of the other. Let’s try walking slowly around the room like we are going to the market. Now let's walk quickly like we are late for school! Jumping: This is when we push off the ground with both feet at the same time and land on both feet. It’s like a frog! Let's pretend we are happy frogs and jump up and down. *Boing, boing!* Running: This is like walking very fast! Both of our feet leave the ground for a moment. We do this when we play outside. Non-Locomotor Movements (Moving on the Spot): Stretching: This is when we make our body parts long. Let’s stretch our hands up, up, up to the sky, like we are trying to pick a big mango from a tall tree. Bending: This is when we lean our body forward or down. Let's bend down and try to touch our toes. We do this when we pick up something we have dropped. Twisting: This is when we turn the top part of our body while our feet stay in one place. Let's twist from side to side, like we are dancing and looking behind us.
