Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on one of the most important things we can do to stay healthy: washing our hands! In Ghana, we love to play outside in the sand, help our parents in the garden, and eat delicious foods like fufu and kenkey with our hands. While doing these wonderful things, we can pick up tiny, invisible things called germs that can make us sick. This lesson will teach our young learners why, when, and how to wash their hands properly with soap and water to fight off these germs, stay healthy, and have more energy to play and learn.

Lesson notes

This lesson is about teaching a practical skill. The explanation should be simple, vivid, and accompanied by actions.

Concept 1: What are Germs? Teacher's Explanation: "My dear children, on our hands, even when they look clean, there are very tiny, invisible things called germs. Think of them like tiny, naughty bugs that you cannot see with your eyes. These germs are everywhere – on the toys we play with, on the door handles, and in the sand outside. If these germs get into our bodies when we touch our mouth, nose, or eyes, they can make us feel sick with a tummy ache or a cough. We don't want that, do we?" Teaching Aid: Show pictures of cartoon germs (spiky but not too scary). You can also use a magnifying glass (even if it doesn't show germs) to illustrate the idea of looking for things we can't normally see.

Concept 2: Our Superheroes - Soap and Water Teacher's Explanation: "But we have special superheroes that can fight these germs! Their names are Soap and Water. When we use them together, they team up to wash all the naughty germs away from our hands and down the drain. Water alone can rinse away dirt, but soap is special because it helps lift the germs off our skin so the water can wash them away easily. They are our health champions!" Teaching Aid: Hold up a bar of soap (or a bottle of liquid soap) and point to the water source (Veronica bucket or tap). Call them "Superhero Soap" and "Superhero Water."

Concept 3: When Do We Wash Our Hands?
