Lesson summary

This week, we will embark on a fun journey to discover the amazing machine that is our own body! Understanding our body parts is the first step towards learning how to take care of ourselves, stay healthy, and be safe. In our daily lives in Ghana, from playing *Ampe* with our friends to helping our parents at home, we use different parts of our body. Knowing their names and what they do helps us to be more aware of ourselves and the world around us. This lesson is designed to be interactive, using songs, games, and movement to make learning about our bodies exciting and memorable for our young learners.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on Body Awareness, which is the understanding of our own body parts and what they can do. For KG1 learners, we start with the most basic and visible parts.

Key Vocabulary: Body, Parts, Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Mouth, Hands, Legs, Feet.

Explanation of Basic Body Parts and Their Functions: We will introduce these concepts using simple, direct language and repetition. Use a large picture of a child, a doll, or your own body to demonstrate.

| Body Part | How to Explain It (Teacher's Script) | Simple Function | Example in a Ghanaian Context | | :-------- | :----------------------------------- | :---------------- | :---------------------------- | | Head | "This is your head. Let's all touch our heads. Your head is at the very top of your body. It is very important because your brain, which helps you think, is inside." | Thinking, Holding our face | "When Mama asks you a question, you use your head to think of the answer." | | Eyes | "These are your eyes. You have two eyes. Point to your eyes. We use them to look at things." | Seeing | "You use your eyes to see the beautiful colours of the Kente cloth." | | Ears | "These are your ears. You have two ears, one on each side of your head. Let's touch our ears." | Hearing | "You use your ears to listen to the sweet sound of the *adowa* drums." | | Nose | "This is your nose. It is in the middle of your face. Point to your nose." | Smelling, Breathing | "You use your nose to smell the delicious aroma of Mama's jollof rice." | | Mouth | "This is your mouth. Let's open our mouths wide... and close them! We use our mouth for many things." | Talking, Eating, Singing | "You use your mouth to say 'Maakye' (Good morning) and to eat your yummy *waakye*." | | Hands | "Show me your hands! Wiggle your fingers! You have two hands. They help us do so many things." | Touching, Holding, Clapping | "You use your hands to hold your pencil and to clap when you are happy." | | Legs | "These are your legs. Let's stand up and stamp our legs. Your legs are long and strong." | Walking, Running, Jumping | "You use your legs to run and play with your friends during break time." | | Feet | "Look down at your feet! Wiggle your toes! Your feet are at the end of your legs." | Standing, Kicking | "You use your feet to stand straight and to kick a football in the park." |
