This week's lessons focus on building a strong foundation for numbers 1 to 5. This is a critical skill because numbers are all around us in our daily Ghanaian lives. We use them when we count our fingers, share snacks with friends, buy things at the local provision store, or count the players in a game of *ampe*. By mastering the numbers 1 to 5, learners develop the confidence to understand and describe the world around them in a mathematical way. This lesson uses hands-on, playful activities to connect the abstract idea of a number to concrete objects and the written symbol (numeral).
This lesson focuses on three main ideas: Counting, Numerals, and Quantity-Numeral Association.
Concept 1: Counting (One-to-one Correspondence) Counting is more than just saying numbers in order (rote counting). True counting means matching one number word to one object. We must teach children to touch each object *only once* as they say the number word. Teacher's Explanation: "My dear children, when we count, we give each thing a special number name. We touch it gently and say its name. Watch me count these bottle caps. I will touch one and say 'one'. I will touch the next one and say 'two'. I will not rush, so I don't miss any or count one twice."
