Lesson summary

This lesson introduces learners to the number six (6). We will build upon their existing knowledge of numbers 1 to 5 from the previous term. The focus is on understanding the quantity 'six', recognizing its written symbol (numeral 6), and counting sets of six objects. This skill is fundamental for everyday activities in Ghana, such as counting items at the market (e.g., 6 mangoes), counting players in a game, or counting story characters. This lesson makes the abstract concept of 'six' concrete and relatable through hands-on activities.

Lesson notes

Concept 1: The Quantity of 'Six'

The number 'six' represents a specific quantity. It is the number that comes directly after five. It is one more than five.

Explanation for Learners (using demonstration): "Class, let's all show five fingers on one hand. Let's count them together: one, two, three, four, five! Very good." "Now, we need one more finger from our other hand. Let's put it up. So we have all five fingers on one hand, and one more. This new total is six." "Let's count all the fingers together now: One, two, three, four, five... six! So, five and one more makes six." Concept 2: One-to-One Correspondence when Counting

This is the most critical skill for accurate counting. It means touching or pointing to one object for each number name said. Young learners often count faster than they point, leading to errors. We must teach them to match one object to one number word.
