Lesson summary

This week's lessons focus on deepening the learners' understanding of numbers by introducing six (6) and seven (7). Building upon their knowledge of numbers 1 to 5, this lesson helps children see how numbers grow one by one. In our daily lives in Ghana, from buying koobi at the market to playing games like ampe, counting is a skill we use every day. This lesson provides the foundation for these essential life skills in a fun and interactive way.

Lesson notes

This week, we are learning about two new numbers that come after five. We will use things we see around us every day to understand them. Concept 1: Understanding "Six" (6) What is Six? Six is the number that comes right after five. It means we have a full hand (five fingers) and one more. Counting to Six: We always count from one to get to six. Like this: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six. Showing Six: With Fingers: Show one full hand (that's 5) and then raise one finger from the other hand. Let's count them together: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 6! With Objects: Let’s use stones (or bottle caps). We will put them in a line and count them aloud. Place one stone: "One" Place another: "Two" ... and so on, until you place the sixth stone and say "Six". This shows a group or set of six. The Numeral "6": This is how we write the number six: 6. It looks like it is curling down to make a small circle at the bottom. How to Write "6": We use a simple rhyme to remember: *"Curve down and make a loop, number six rolls a hoop."* Start at the top. Make a big curve downwards, like the letter 'C'. Continue the curve until it loops back and touches the middle of the line.

*(Teacher demonstrates on the board, in the air, and encourages learners to trace it in sand trays or on their tables with their fingers.)* Concept 2: Understanding "Seven" (7) What is Seven? Seven is the number that comes right after six. It is one more than six. Counting to Seven: Let's count together: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven. Showing Seven: With Fingers: Show one full hand (that's 5) and then raise two fingers from the other hand. Let's count them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 6, 7! With Objects: Let's use groundnuts. We will count them out one by one. Place one groundnut: "One" ... continue until you place the seventh groundnut and say "Seven". This is a group of seven groundnuts. The Numeral "7": This is how we write the number seven: 7. It has a straight line at the top and another line slanting down. How to Write "7": We use this rhyme: *"Across the sky and down from heaven, that's the way we make a seven."* Start at the top. Draw a straight line from left to right (across the sky). Without lifting your pencil, draw a slanted line down to the bottom (down from heaven).

*(Teacher demonstrates on the board, in the air, and encourages learners to trace it.)*
