This week's lesson focuses on three fundamental movement skills that are the building blocks for more complex physical activities like sports, dancing, and everyday play. In our Ghanaian communities, children are always running, playing games like *ampe* and *tumatu* (hopscotch), and navigating different kinds of ground. Mastering hopping, jumping, and balancing helps them to play safely, build strong muscles and bones, improve their coordination, and gain confidence in their physical abilities. This lesson is designed to be fun, active, and engaging, using games and activities that are familiar to our learners.
This lesson focuses on three distinct gross motor skills. It is important to explain and demonstrate each one clearly, using simple language and actions.
Concept 1: Hopping Explanation for the Teacher: Hopping is a movement where you take off from one foot and land on the *very same foot*. It requires strength in one leg and good balance. It's a continuous, springy action. How to Explain to Learners: "Today, we will learn to hop like a little bird looking for food! When we hop, we stand on one leg, bend it a little, and push up! Then we land on the *same* leg. Let’s try. Lift one leg up like this. Now, little hop... hop... hop! We use only one foot." Ghanaian Context Example: "When you play *tumatu* (hopscotch), you have to hop from one box to another on one foot. That is hopping!"
Concept 2: Jumping Explanation for the Teacher: Jumping involves taking off from two feet and landing on two feet simultaneously. It is a powerful movement that uses both legs to propel the body upwards or forwards. How to Explain to Learners: "Now, let’s be like a frog! A frog jumps with two feet together. We will put our two feet together, bend our knees like we are sitting on a small stool, swing our arms back, and JUMP! We land on our two feet together. Two feet go up, two feet come down." Ghanaian Context Example: "Imagine there is a small puddle of water from the rain on the ground. To get over it without getting wet, you do a big jump with two feet!"
Concept 3: Balancing Explanation for the Teacher: Balancing is the ability to maintain the body's centre of mass over its base of support. For young children, this means being able to hold a position without wobbling or falling over. It is crucial for almost all physical activities. How to Explain to Learners: "Balancing is when we try to stand very still, like a statue or a tall tree, and not fall down. We are going to try standing on just one leg. Let's pretend to be a flamingo, a tall bird that loves to stand on one leg in the water. Lift one leg, and hold it... try not to wobble! It's okay if you wobble a little, just try again." Ghanaian Context Example: "Sometimes when you walk on a narrow piece of wood or a line in the pavement, you have to balance carefully so you don't step off. That is balancing!"
