Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to the number six (6). Understanding numbers is a fundamental building block for all future mathematics. In our daily lives here in Ghana, we encounter the number six often – from counting six eggs in a small crate to counting the legs on an insect like an ant or a butterfly. This lesson will use playful, hands-on activities to make the number 6 a familiar friend to our learners, helping them see and use numbers in the world around them.

Lesson notes

Concept 1: What is Counting? Counting is how we find out "how many" of something there are. When we count, we must do two things very carefully: Touch and Say: We touch each object only ONCE. One Number for One Object: We say one number name for each object we touch. The last number we say tells us the total number of objects in the group. This is called cardinality.

Concept 2: Understanding the Number "Six (6)" The number "six" is the name we give to a group of this many things: (Show 6 fingers) (Show 6 pebbles) (Show 6 bottle caps)

Six comes right after five. It is one more than five. We can show this easily: Start with a group of 5 stones. "Let's count: one, two, three, four, five." Add one more stone. "Now, let's add one more. Let's count again: one, two, three, four, five, six!" So, 5 and 1 more makes 6.

Concept 3: Recognising and Forming the Numeral '6' The number six is written with a special symbol called a numeral. This is what it looks like: 6.
