Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to the foundational concept of addition. We will explore addition not as abstract numbers, but as the real and physical action of "putting together" or "joining" groups of items. This skill is vital for everyday life in Ghana, from sharing snacks with friends at break time, to helping a parent count items bought from the market, or even counting players for a game of *ampe*. By using familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and beads, we make the concept of 'getting more' tangible, fun, and easy to understand.

Lesson notes

Core Concept: Addition as "Putting Together"

At this stage, we will not use the formal words 'addition', 'plus', or the symbols `+` and `=`. Instead, we focus on the action and the language of combining.

Explanation: "Putting together" simply means joining two or more small groups of things to make one big group. We then count everything in the new big group to find out how many we have in total, or "altogether".

Key Vocabulary: And: Used to connect the two small groups. (e.g., "3 stones *and* 2 stones") Makes: The result of joining the groups. (e.g., "3 stones and 2 stones *makes* 5 stones") Join / Put together: The action of combining the groups. Altogether / In total: The final count of the new, single group.
