Performance objectives

Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on the fundamental gross motor skills of throwing and catching. These skills are essential for play, sports, and overall physical coordination. In our Ghanaian communities, children love to play games like 'ampe', football, and simple 'catch' in the compound. Learning to throw and catch properly helps children play safely with their friends, improves their hand-eye coordination, and builds confidence in their physical abilities. This lesson will use fun, play-based activities to help learners practice these important skills using soft balls, beanbags, and other safe materials.

Lesson notes

This lesson is practical and based on demonstration. The "explanation" is done through showing, telling, and doing.

Key Concepts: Throwing: This is when we use our hands and arms to push an object away from us and send it through the air. Teacher's Explanation (with demonstration): "Look at me, my friends! Throwing is like giving the ball a big push to fly. We will use *two hands* like this. We put the ball in our hands, bring it to our chest, and then PUSH it forward! Watch me... one, two, three, PUSH!" Step-by-step for the child: Hold the ball: Hold the soft ball with both hands, fingers spread around it. Ready Position: Bring the ball close to your chest. Aim: Look where you want the ball to go (the target). Push!: Push your arms forward and let go of the ball. Catching: This is when we use our hands to stop an object that is coming towards us through the air. Teacher's Explanation (with demonstration): "Now, let's learn to catch! Catching is like making a soft basket with your hands to welcome the ball. We open our hands big and wide like this. We watch the ball with our eyes... watch, watch, watch... and when it comes, we close our hands gently around it. Don't be afraid of the ball; it is our friend." Step-by-step for the child: Ready Hands: Hold your hands out in front of you, with palms up and fingers open. Make a "basket" shape. Watch the Ball: Your eyes must follow the ball as it comes to you. Don't close your eyes! Catch: As the ball touches your hands, pull it in towards your body. This makes the catch softer. Balance (The "Strong Tree" Stance): This is how we stand so we don't fall over when we throw or catch. Teacher's Explanation (with demonstration): "To be strong players, we must stand like a strong mango tree. A tree has strong roots. Our feet are our roots! We put our feet a little bit apart, like this. Not too close, not too wide. Now try to rock side-to-side. See? You are strong! You will not fall down when you throw the ball." Target: This is the place where we want our ball to go. Teacher's Explanation (pointing to a bucket): "See this bucket? This is our target. We want to tell the ball, 'Ball, please go inside the bucket!' We must look at the target before we throw."

Materials Needed: Soft, light balls (sponge balls, small plastic balls) Beanbags or small, tied-up pieces of cloth with sand/gari inside. Balloons or light scarves. Large, low baskets, buckets, or hula hoops.
