This lesson introduces the foundational concept of "one more." In our daily lives in Ghana, we are always adding small quantities. When Mama gives you one more biscuit, when you find one more stone for your game, or when a seller adds a 'dash' at the market, you are experiencing "one more." Understanding this concept is the first step towards learning addition and helps us understand how numbers grow. This lesson will use familiar objects, games, and songs to make learning this important idea fun and easy.
The main idea for today is understanding what "one more" means.
Explanation: "One more" is a simple but powerful idea. It means adding just one single item to a group of things you already have. When we count, the next number we say is always "one more" than the number before it. If you have 2 mangoes and someone gives you one more, you now have 3 mangoes. If you count 5 cars passing on the road and then one more car passes, a total of 6 cars have passed. The number that comes right after any number when you count is one more than that number. For example, after 4 comes 5, so 5 is one more than 4.
We will use concrete objects like bottle caps, stones, seeds, and our fingers to see and feel what "one more" looks like. This helps our brains understand the concept before we start using only numbers.
