This lesson introduces our young learners to the foundational concept of addition. We will explore addition not as abstract numbers, but as the simple, practical action of "joining," "combining," or "putting groups together." This skill is essential for everyday life in Ghana, from sharing snacks like nkate cake with friends to counting items at the market or playing games with pebbles. By using familiar objects, we make the idea of "how many altogether?" a fun and understandable discovery.
The main idea for this week is combining sets or addition. We will explain this using three simple steps that we can repeat with different materials.
Concept 1: What is "Combining"? "Combining" or "joining" simply means putting things together. We start with small, separate groups and bring them together to make one big group. Teacher's Language: "Look, I have some bottle caps here (show one small group). And I have some more bottle caps here (show another separate group). When I push them all together into one pile, I am *combining* them. I am *adding* them together."
Concept 2: What is "Altogether" or "Total"? "Altogether" or "total" is the word we use for the final number after we have combined the groups. It means we must count *every single item* in the new big group. Teacher's Language: "Now that we have put them all together, how many do we have *altogether*? Let's count them all to find the *total*."
Step-by-Step Process for Adding: Count the First Group: Place the first group of objects and count them aloud. "One, two. I have 2 stones." Count the Second Group: Place the second group of objects nearby and count them. "One. I have 1 stone here." Combine: Physically push the two groups together to make one big group. Count the Total: Count all the objects in the new, big group, touching each one. "Let's count them altogether now. One... two... three! So, 2 stones and 1 stone makes 3 stones."
