This lesson focuses on keeping ourselves safe when we are near roads. In Ghana, we walk to the market, to church, to school, and to visit our friends and family. The roads can be busy with cars, trotros, aboboyaas, and okadas. Learning how to be safe near the road is one of the most important things a child can learn to protect themselves and stay healthy. This lesson will teach our young learners the basic rules of road safety in a fun, interactive, and memorable way.
This lesson introduces foundational concepts of road safety. We will use simple language, repetition, and actions to ensure understanding.
Concept 1: The Road is for Vehicles, Not for Playing Explanation: We must teach children that the road is a special place made for things with wheels, like cars, buses (trotros), motorbikes (okadas), and trucks. It is very dangerous to play on or near the road because the drivers may not see a small child. Example: "Look outside. We see a road. A trotro is driving on it. Is the trotro playing? No. It is working. Is Auntie Esi playing on the road? No. She is walking on the pavement (the side of the road). The road is for cars. The compound is for playing."
Concept 2: The Traffic Light (The "Robot") Explanation: A traffic light helps everyone take turns on the road. It has three colours, and each colour is a message for the drivers. In Ghana, many people call it the "robot". Step-by-step Breakdown: RED is at the top. When the light is red, it means STOP! All cars must stop and wait. It is the boss of the road! YELLOW (or AMBER) is in the middle. It means GET READY. The light is about to change. Cars should slow down and prepare to stop. GREEN is at the bottom. It means GO! It is safe for the cars to move now. Important Note for KG1: We must emphasize to the children that even if the car light is red, they should NEVER cross alone. They must always hold the hand of a grown-up.
Concept 3: The Golden Rule - "Stop, Look, and Listen" Explanation: This is the most important rule for crossing any road, even a small, quiet one. We must use our eyes and our ears to check if it is safe. Step-by-step Actions: STOP: First, find a safe place to cross. Stop at the edge of the road. Do not stand in the road. LOOK: Use your eyes. Look to your left. (Teacher points left). Look to your right. (Teacher points right). Look to your left one more time. This is very important because the cars closest to you come from the left. LISTEN: Use your ears. Sometimes you can hear a car or an okada before you can see it. CROSS SAFELY: If there are no cars coming, walk quickly across the road. Do not run. And most importantly, always hold an adult's hand.
