This first week's lesson is foundational for the entire term. We will revisit and strengthen the children's understanding of numbers from 1 to 10. Counting is a skill we use every day in Ghana – from counting the coins to buy 'kool-aid' or 'bofrot', to sharing pieces of yam with siblings, or counting our friends when we play 'ampe'. By mastering counting and number recognition, learners build the confidence they need for all future mathematics topics. This lesson will be hands-on, playful, and connected to their immediate environment.
This lesson focuses on three core ideas about numbers. We will use simple language and plenty of examples.
Concept 1: Rote Counting (The Number Song)
Rote counting is saying numbers in the correct order, like singing a song. It is about memory. We don't need objects to do this. Explanation: "Class, let's learn the number song! It goes like this: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten! When we say the numbers in order without stopping, we are 'rote counting'. Let's try it together with a clap for each number." Activity: Lead the class in a "Count and Clap" song. "One!" (clap) "Two!" (clap) ...and so on, up to 10. Repeat this with stomping, jumping, and other actions to make it fun and memorable.
Concept 2: Rational Counting (One-to-One Correspondence)
