This lesson is the foundation for our journey in Physical Development. It is designed to help our young learners become more aware of their own bodies and the wonderful ways they can move. In Ghana, our daily lives are full of movement – from playing *ampe* and football in the compound, to helping with chores like sweeping, to dancing at festivals. Understanding and controlling our bodies helps us to perform these activities safely, confidently, and with joy. This first lesson will focus on identifying key body parts and exploring basic movements that we use every single day.
This lesson is best taught through action and play. The explanations should be accompanied by demonstrations from the teacher and immediate practice by the learners.
Concept 1: Knowing Our Body Parts Our body is made of many parts that work together. For today, we will learn about the big parts that help us move. Head: This is at the top of your body. It has your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. We can nod our head "yes" and shake it "no". Arms: These are at your sides. You can wave them to say "hello!" or stretch them wide. At the end of your arms are your Hands, which we use to clap, hold things, and write. Legs: These are the long parts that help us stand, walk, and run. At the bottom of our legs are our Feet, which we use to stand on the ground. Torso/Tummy: This is the middle part of your body that connects your head, arms, and legs. We can twist and bend our torso.
*(Teacher's Note: Use the song "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" to reinforce this concept dynamically.)*
Concept 2: Movements That Take Us Somewhere (Locomotor Skills) These are movements where our body travels from one place to another. Walking: This is how we move around most of the time. How to do it: Stand up straight. Put one foot in front of the other. Swing your arms gently. Look where you are going. *Example:* Let's pretend we are walking to the market to buy some yam. We walk carefully so we don't fall. Running: This is like walking, but faster! How to do it: We move our legs faster and pump our arms. It's important to run in a safe, open space. *Example:* Let's pretend we are playing football and running to score a goal! Jumping: This is when we push off the ground with both feet at the same time. How to do it: Bend your knees, swing your arms back, then swing them forward as you push off the ground with both feet. Land with your knees bent. *Example:* Let's pretend we are a frog jumping near the river. Boing! Boing! Hopping: This is like jumping, but on one foot. How to do it: Stand on one leg. Bend your knee and hop up and down. *Example:* We do this when we play *tumatu* (hopscotch).
