Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to the wonderful world of food and how it helps their bodies. In Ghana, we are blessed with a variety of delicious foods. It is important for children to understand from a young age that the food we eat is like fuel for our bodies. Eating the right kinds of food helps us to grow strong, have energy to play games like *ampe* and football, and helps our brains to learn new things in class. This lesson will focus on identifying healthy foods, understanding why they are good for us, and recognizing foods that we should only eat sometimes.

Lesson notes

This lesson uses the "Go, Grow, and Glow" concept, which is a simple and effective way for young children to understand food groups.

Concept 1: What are Healthy Foods? Healthy foods are the foods that our bodies need every day to be strong and active. We can group them into three main types: Go Foods (Energy Foods): These foods give us energy to run, jump, play, and learn. They are like the fuel in a car that makes it move. Ghanaian Examples: Yam, Cassava, Plantain, Rice (like in Waakye or Rice Balls/Omo Tuo), Kenkey, Banku, Gari, Bread. Simple Explanation: "When you eat yam or kenkey, you get power to run fast during playtime and you don't feel tired in class." Grow Foods (Body-Building Foods): These foods help us grow bigger and stronger. They build our muscles, bones, and teeth. Ghanaian Examples: Fish (like tilapia or salmon), Chicken, Eggs, Beans (like in Red-Red), Groundnuts, Milk. Simple Explanation: "Eating fish and beans helps your bones grow strong and makes you taller. It helps repair your body if you get a small cut." Glow Foods (Protective Foods): These foods are full of vitamins that protect us from getting sick. They help our skin to be smooth and our eyes to see clearly. They make our bodies "glow" with health. Ghanaian Examples: Fruits like Mango, Orange, Pineapple, Pawpaw, Banana, Watermelon. Vegetables like Kontomire (spinach), Garden Eggs, Okro, Tomatoes, Carrots. Simple Explanation: "Eating an orange or some kontomire soup helps your body fight off coughs and colds, so you don't miss school."

Concept 2: What are Unhealthy Foods? (Sometimes Foods) These are foods that are often very sweet or oily and do not give our bodies the good things they need. While they can be tasty, eating too many of them can make us feel tired, unwell, or gain unhealthy weight. We should only eat them in small amounts and not every day. That is why we can call them "Sometimes Foods." Ghanaian Examples: Toffees and sweets, fizzy drinks (like Coke, Fanta), ice cream, meat pies, bofrot (puff-puff), fried instant noodles, too many biscuits. Simple Explanation: "A sweet is nice, but it has too much sugar. It is a 'sometimes food.' It is better to eat a banana, which is sweet and also helps your body glow!"

Concept 3: The Importance of Water Water is the most important drink for our bodies. It is a super-healthy drink! Why we need it: It helps our 'Go, Grow, and Glow' foods work properly. It keeps our bodies cool, especially on hot days in Ghana. It helps our brain think well. Simple Explanation: "Imagine you are a plant. What do you need to grow? Water! Your body is the same. You need to drink plenty of water every day to stay fresh and strong."
