This week, we are learning about a very important idea in mathematics called addition. Addition is simply about putting things together to find out how many we have in total. We use addition every day in our lives here in Ghana. When we buy two oranges and our mother gives us one more, we use addition to know we now have three. When we are playing with our friends and we join our toys together, we use addition to count all the toys. Learning about addition helps us to count things accurately and solve simple problems at home, in the market, and at school. This lesson will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and drawings to make learning fun and easy.
Concept 1: What is Addition?
Addition is the process of bringing two or more groups of items together and counting the total number of items. It's like making a bigger family from two smaller families. Keywords we will use: Join / Put together: This is the action of adding. And / Plus: The word we use to show we are adding. Altogether / Total: The final answer after we have joined the groups. Makes / Equals: The word that comes before the final answer.
Example 1: Using a Real-Life Story and Objects
Let's imagine a story. "Adwoa has 4 mangoes. Her brother Yaw gives her 2 more mangoes. How many mangoes does Adwoa have altogether?"
