This week, we will learn a very important skill called addition. Addition is something we do every day in our lives here in Ghana. When we buy two mangoes and then buy three more oranges at the market, we use addition to know how many fruits we have in total. When we share our biscuits with a friend, we are thinking about parts and totals. Learning how to add helps us count things accurately, solve simple problems, and understand the world around us better. We will use fun objects like stones, bottle caps, and our fingers to make learning easy and exciting.
Concept 1: What is Addition?
Addition is simply the process of putting things together to find out how many there are in total. We use special words when we add: Add: To join something to another thing. Join / Put together: Combining groups. Altogether / In all / Total: These words ask for the final number after we have joined the groups. Sum: This is the special mathematical name for the answer we get when we add.
Teaching Method: We will learn addition by using things we can see and touch. This is called using concrete materials or counters. Good counters we can use in our classroom are: Bottle caps Smooth stones or pebbles Beans or seeds Sticks or straws
