This lesson introduces our young learners to the concept of addition. Addition is simply about joining groups of items together to find out how many there are in total. This is a skill we use every day in Ghana. For example, when we buy 2 ripe mangoes and our friend gives us 1 more, we use addition to know we now have 3 mangoes. Understanding addition helps us count our money, share our snacks, and play games fairly. Today, we will learn how to join groups and count on to find a total, using objects we can see and touch.
The main idea for today is Addition. Addition means "putting things together" or "joining" groups. When we add, we find out the total number of items we have after combining them. We will learn two main ways to do this. Method 1: Combining Sets (Putting Together)
This is the simplest way to understand addition. We take two separate groups and physically put them together into one big group, then we count everything.
Vocabulary: "and" or "plus" means we are joining. "makes" or "equals" tells us the total. "altogether" means the final, total amount.
